Renting Safely in Chennai
- Never pay a token advance before visiting the property and meeting the owner in person.
- Ask to see the owner's ID and a recent EB bill or property tax receipt in their name.
- Be wary of rents far below the area's typical asking rent — compare with the Chennai Rent Index.
- Put rent, deposit, maintenance and refund terms in a written, registered agreement. See the rental agreement guide.
- Pay by traceable methods (bank transfer/UPI to the owner's own name) and keep receipts.
- Don't share OTPs, bank PINs or ID scans with anyone who contacts you about an ad.
